Glossary

As the goal of this blog is to give a window into a seamless Evangelical worldview, the following definitions, explanations, and descriptions are written from that point of view wherever possible. If you are offended by the description of a group to which you belong, please remember that these words no longer reflect my personal beliefs. (When applicable, I have added a brief account in green text of how non-Evangelical traditions or scholars understand each term.)

Numbers

• 666--"The Mark of the Beast" (Revelation 13)--Opinion varies pretty widely among Evangelicals about exactly what this number represents, but there is general agreement that it is meant to be understood literally, and that in the "End Times," just before Christ's return, governmental bodies will require people to have it tattooed on their skin. Most scholars agree that this is a reference to the Emperor Nero, and more broadly, to the cult of the Emperor in classical Rome.
